Do not evaluate imports when reading an algorithm score - #9254
BundleAlgo.get_score() builds a ConfigParser from configs/hyper_parameters.yaml in the algorithm output directory and evaluates ckpt_path with eval(). That directory is not always one this process wrote: import_bundle_algo_history() walks any work directory (a collaborator's results archive, a shared mount, a downloaded model-zoo artifact), and the caller wraps get_score() in a bare except Exception: pass, so a $ expression in that file runs code and leaves no trace.
Reproduced before the change: a work directory with
ckpt_path: "$__import__('pathlib').Path('/tmp/marker').write_text('x') and '/tmp/none'"
writes the marker when import_bundle_algo_history() is called, and the resulting FileNotFoundError is swallowed, so the import looks like a normal untrained directory.
get_score() no longer calls eval for this value. ckpt_path is resolved by a small dedicated reader that accepts exactly the shapes the shipped templates use:
a plain string,
+ concatenation of string literals,
@references to other entries, and str() around a single reference, which covers the template forms $@bundle_root + '/model' (segresnet) and $@bundle_root + '/model_fold' + str(@fold) (dints, swinunetr).
Any other call, attribute access, comprehensions and _target_ mappings raise a ValueError; an integer reference is accepted only inside str(), never concatenated directly. Nothing is instantiated: get_parsed_content is not used, so the instantiate=True default cannot construct a component from the file.
This matters because two weaker variants do not hold. Emptying __builtins__ still leaves eval reachable through ().__class__.__base__.__subclasses__(), and get_parsed_content would instantiate a _target_ mapping before any type check.
import_bundle_algo_history() also logs the failure at warning level instead of dropping it, so a refused config and a missing checkpoint directory are no longer indistinguishable.
Behaviour changes
A ckpt_path that relied on a call or an attribute no longer resolves; no shipped template does either, and the plain and @reference forms are covered by tests. A ckpt_path that fails to resolve previously produced a silent None score and now also logs a warning. Directories whose progress.yaml is missing behave as before.
Tests
New tests/auto3dseg/test_algo_score_config.py:
a $__import__ payload raises and the marker is not written
the __subclasses__() escape raises and the marker is not written
a _target_ mapping raises instead of being instantiated
module access ($str(torch.tensor(1))) raises
a plain path, string concatenation, $@bundle_root + '/model', $@bundle_root + '/model_fold' + str(@fold) and a whole-value @reference all resolve and return the score
an integer reference concatenated directly, a reference-table key that was not a matched @reference, and a reference to an id missing from the file all raise ValueError
end to end, importing a work directory with a malicious config does not execute it and logs a warning
The payload tests fail on the current dev (the expression runs) and pass with the change. pytest tests/auto3dseg -q gives 49 passed, 1 skipped.
Types of changes
Non-breaking change for documented bundle templates.
`BundleAlgo.get_score()` builds a `ConfigParser` from `configs/hyper_parameters.yaml` in the algorithm
output directory and evaluates `ckpt_path` with `eval()`. That directory is not always one this process
wrote: `import_bundle_algo_history()` walks any work directory, and the caller wraps `get_score()` in a
bare `except Exception: pass`, so a work directory from a collaborator, a shared mount or a downloaded
archive could run code through a `$` expression and leave no trace.
`ckpt_path` is now evaluated with no module globals and empty builtins: the documented string forms,
including `$@bundle_root + '/model_fold_0'`, still resolve, while `__import__`, `monai`, `torch` and
`numpy` are out of reach. A resolved value that is not a string raises a `ValueError` instead of reaching
`os.path.join`, and the history importer logs the failure instead of swallowing it silently.
Tests: new `tests/auto3dseg/test_algo_score_config.py` covers a `$` payload, module access, the two
supported string forms, and an end-to-end import of a work directory with a malicious config. The three
payload tests fail on `dev` (the expression runs) and pass here; `tests/auto3dseg` 41 passed, 1 skipped.

It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Reading an algorithm score no longer evaluates configuration content, and the common template forms such as str(@fold) remain supported. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains in the supplied evidence.

The new ValueError guard in get_score() has no test. Removing it would leave the suite passing. A numeric ckpt_path would then fail in os.path.join with a TypeError. The added test writes ckpt_path: 123 and asserts ValueError.

Add a regression test for get_score() that supplies a numeric ckpt_path in the
configuration and asserts that the call raises ValueError, covering the new type
guard.
Use a torch-only payload in the module-scope test.
The payload $str(torch.tensor(1)) fails on the missing str builtin. The test raises RuntimeError even when torch is in scope, so it cannot detect restored module access.
With $torch.tensor(1), the current code raises RuntimeError at the torch lookup. If module access returns, get_score raises ValueError from the isinstance(ckpt_path, str) check. The test then errors instead of passing.

Update the payload passed to _write_config in the module-scope test to reference
only torch, so the test’s RuntimeError assertion specifically checks whether
module access is blocked rather than failing on the missing str builtin. Leave
the _algo().get_score() call and its expected exception unchanged.
Add a test that resolves $@bundle_root through get_score().
test_string_expression_still_resolves names the documented $@bundle_root form, but it writes a literal absolute path. No test in tests/ reads ckpt_path through BundleAlgo.get_score() with an @bundle_root reference. A regression in @bundle_root resolution would pass the suite.

Review feedback on the previous commit: `__builtins__ = {}` does not stop `eval`, since
`().__class__.__base__.__subclasses__()` still walks to a class whose module exposes builtins, and
`get_parsed_content` defaults to `instantiate=True`, so a `_target_` mapping in `ckpt_path` is
constructed before any type check runs.
`get_score()` no longer calls `eval` at all. `ckpt_path` is resolved by a small dedicated reader that
accepts exactly the shapes the bundle templates use: a plain string, `+` concatenation of string
literals, and `@references` to other plain-string entries, which covers
`$@bundle_root + '/model_fold_0'`. Calls, attribute access, comprehensions and `_target_` mappings are
refused with a `ValueError`. No component is instantiated and no expression is executed.
Tests: `tests/auto3dseg/test_algo_score_config.py` now covers the `__subclasses__()` escape, a
`_target_` mapping, module access, the reference form used by the shipped templates, and the end-to-end
import of a malicious work directory. The three payload tests fail on `dev` and pass here;
`tests/auto3dseg` 45 passed, 1 skipped.

Review feedback on the score config reader. The `dints` and `swinunetr` templates set
`ckpt_path: $@bundle_root + '/model_fold' + str(@fold)`, where `fold` is an integer. The reader refused
the integer reference and had no `str()` branch, so those two templates could not resolve their score,
and `import_bundle_algo_history` dropped them from the trained set.
An integer reference is now accepted, but only when it is the single positional argument of `str()`;
concatenating it directly is still refused. A subscript into the reference table whose key was not a
matched `@reference` now raises `ValueError` instead of `KeyError`, matching the documented contract.
Tests: the two template forms (`$@bundle_root + '/model_fold' + str(@fold)` and the segresnet form), the
direct-concatenation refusal, and an unknown reference key. `tests/auto3dseg` 48 passed, 1 skipped.
