fix: confine CopyTree reads to the source root - #37
CopyTree has four related gaps on a lower-trust source: a file swapped for a symlink between the walk's lstat and the open reads bytes from outside the tree; a FIFO blocks os.Open forever; a device node copies without bound; and src/dst containing one another makes the walk discover its own output (fixes#36).
Root cause
filepath.Walk lists entries but copyFile re-opens the raw path, so nothing ties the read to the walked entry, and nothing restricts what counts as a copyable file.
Fix
The source is read through os.OpenRoot (root.FS() walk, root.Open, root.Readlink), so a link that escapes is refused at open time; entries that are not directories, symlinks or regular files are refused; CopyTree takes a ctx and checks it per entry; overlap is refused up front in both directions.
Testing
New tests: overlap refusal (both directions), a cancelled context stops at the next entry, and a planted FIFO is refused (unix-only, skipped on Windows). The existing symlink test now skips cleanly where creating a symlink needs privileges. go test ./... failure set is unchanged from the pre-existing Windows baseline; gofmt/go vet clean.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Repository copying now responds to cancellation, including while traversing directory contents.
Copying is refused when the source and destination overlap, including when symlinks create an overlap.
Unsupported file types, such as named pipes, are rejected rather than copied.
Symlinks are recreated when copying a repository.
Copying refuses destination symlinks that could redirect writes outside the destination.
Copied files and directories retain their permissions.
Copying verifies that opened paths are the expected file or directory type.
Four gaps in a lower-trust source: copyFile opened the walked path
fresh, so a file swapped for a symlink between the two reads pulled
bytes from outside the tree — the source is now read through
os.OpenRoot, which refuses a link that escapes at open time. Anything
that is not a directory, a symlink or a regular file (a FIFO blocks on
open, a device node copies without bound) is refused instead of
treated as a regular file. CopyTree takes a context and stops at the
next entry on cancellation. src and dst containing one another, which
would make the walk discover its own output, are refused up front.

Thanks for picking up #36. A few things need fixing before this can merge.
fs_unix_test.go doesn't compile: it uses runtime.GOOS without importing runtime (go vet . fails with undefined: runtime). The check is redundant under //go:build !windows anyway, so delete it rather than adding the import.
The "src inside dst" half of TestCopyTreeRefusesOverlap doesn't test overlap. Each t.TempDir() call returns a new sibling directory, so filepath.Join(t.TempDir(), "in") is not under the second t.TempDir(), and the call only fails because the source doesn't exist. Create one dir, make dst/in inside it, and assert the error is the overlap error rather than an open error.
The type check uses d.Info() from the walk, then root.Open(name) opens the path again. A regular file swapped for a FIFO in that window still blocks Open, and cancelling ctx won't unblock it. Open with O_NONBLOCK on unix via root.OpenFile, then f.Stat() and refuse anything that isn't regular before copying. The post-open stat also catches a swapped-in device node.
containsPath compares filepath.Abs paths without resolving symlinks, so a dst under a symlink that resolves into src passes the check and the walk copies into its own output. Resolve src and the deepest existing ancestor of dst with filepath.EvalSymlinks before comparing, and add a test for it.
Cut the CopyTree doc comment back to the original two lines plus one short sentence on what is refused; the rest describes the implementation. Drop the comments above the three new tests, which restate the test names.
The Windows symlink skip in TestCopyTreeCopiesFilesDirectoriesAndSymlinks isn't related to #36; please drop it from this PR.
…p check
Address review on git-pkgs#37:
- delete the redundant runtime.GOOS check that broke the unix build
- open each file with O_NONBLOCK through os.Root, then stat the descriptor:
a FIFO or device node swapped in after the walk is refused, not waited on
- resolve symlinks in the deepest existing ancestor of both paths before
comparing, so a dst reached through a link into src is still overlap
- make the src-inside-dst test actually nest one inside the other, and add
a symlink-overlap test
- cut the doc and test comments back to the non-obvious parts; drop the
unrelated Windows symlink skip

CopyTree now accepts a context and uses rooted filesystem operations. It checks for overlapping source and destination paths, checks for cancellation during traversal, recreates symlinks, and rejects unsupported file types. Cache.Prepare passes its context to CopyTree.
Changes: Tree copy safeguards
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Rooted traversal and overlap checks fs.go, fs_test.go, fs_unix_test.go
CopyTree resolves existing path prefixes when checking for overlapping source and destination paths. It opens and anchors filesystem roots for copying. Tests cover direct overlap and overlap through a symlink.
CopyTree checks cancellation during traversal, recreates symlinks, copies regular files, and rejects unsupported file types. Platform-specific files define the nonblocking open flag. Cache.Prepare passes its context to CopyTree. Tests cover cancellation, FIFO refusal, symlink handling, and standard copying.
CopyTree now confines source reads and checks the context. On js/wasm, a source entry swapped for a FIFO could still make the copy block. This is a narrow, acknowledged limitation, so the change is mergeable with owner awareness.

Explanation
[ #36 ] fs.go roots source reads, checks context per entry, rejects overlap, and checks file types. Tests cover overlap, cancellation, and FIFO refusal. On js/wasm under Node, nonblockFlag is zero. The directory-open issue still needs fixing. I reproduced it through CopyTree: replacing a listed directory with a FIFO blocks traversal, and cancelling the context does not release it. copyFromRoot protects file opens, but Root.FS().ReadDir still uses a blocking open. Please open directories without blocking, validate that the opened descriptor is a directory before enumeration, and add a regression test covering the replacement and cancellation.
fs.WalkDir enumerated directories through os.Root.FS, whose Open blocks
on a FIFO. If a listed directory was replaced after the parent readdir,
traversal stalled and cancelling the context could not release it.
Walk directories through a non-blocking open and stat the descriptor
before ReadDir, refusing anything that is no longer a directory. The
regression tests swap a directory for a FIFO between listing and open,
and cancel the context partway through the walk.

Fixed in a3781f1. Traversal now opens every directory with O_NONBLOCK through os.Root, stats the descriptor before ReadDir, and refuses it when it is no longer a directory; the context is checked at each entry. Added regression tests for a directory swapped for a FIFO between listing and open, and for cancellation partway through the walk. GOOS=linux go vet is clean and the Linux test suite passes.

Anchor the destination before copying.
The overlap check does not protect the later destination operations. If dst or a destination prefix is replaced with a symlink to src after validation, os.MkdirAll and os.OpenFile can write through that symlink. A copied source file can then be truncated through its destination path.
Create and validate a destination ancestor before the copy, then perform directory creation and file writes relative to that anchored descriptor. Do not resolve the destination through the path again after the overlap check.

Keeping this PR scoped to source confinement (issue #36): destination symlink swaps are pre-existing behaviour, and dst is chosen by the caller. Anchoring the destination with its own os.Root is a reasonable follow-up, but it changes copy semantics and widens this change significantly, so I'd rather not fold it in here.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@bfs2021 Understood. Destination anchoring is separate hardening and need not be included in this source-confinement change. The destination-swap risk remains, but your scope clarification does not indicate a fix or a regression introduced by this PR.
Would you like me to open a follow-up issue for destination anchoring?

The earlier points are all addressed. Three more things:
In the default branch of copyDir, every entry that isn't a directory or symlink is opened before it gets refused, including character and block devices. O_NONBLOCK keeps the open from hanging, but the device driver's open handler still runs (opening a tape device rewinds it, for example). Refuse when !entry.Type().IsRegular() before opening, and keep the post-open Stat in copyFromRoot to catch a swap.
Delete the comment above copyDir. It repeats the one on openRootDir.
Please anchor the destination in this PR too. dst and its parents are still resolved by path, so a symlink planted under dst during the copy redirects MkdirAll, Symlink and the file create elsewhere, including into src, which the overlap check is meant to prevent. Create dst, open it with os.OpenRoot, and do the mkdir, symlink and file create calls through that root. Add a test that plants a symlink under dst mid-copy (the open hook works for this) and checks that nothing is written outside dst.
Refuse entries that are not regular files in copyDir before opening them, so
the driver behind a device node never runs; copyFromRoot keeps its post-open
Stat to catch a swap. Drop the copyDir comment that repeated openRootDir's.
Create the destination, open a root on it, and do every Mkdir, Symlink and
file create through that root: by path, a symlink planted under dst mid-copy
redirected writes anywhere, including into src. A test plants one mid-copy
via the open hook and checks nothing lands outside dst.
Signed-off-by: bfs2021 <101915083+bfs2021@users.noreply.github.com>
copyDir's default branch now refuses !entry.Type().IsRegular() before opening, so the driver behind a device node never runs. The post-open Stat in copyFromRoot stays to catch a swap.
The comment above copyDir is gone.
The destination is anchored: copyTree creates dst, opens it with os.OpenRoot, and every Mkdir, Symlink and file create goes through that root (dstRoot.Mkdir/Symlink/OpenFile); copyFromRoot writes through it too. The one create that stays by path is dst itself, before the root is open.
The new test plants a symlink at dst/sub via the open hook while the copy is between opening the source dir and creating the destination dir, and asserts the copy fails and esc stays empty. Against the previous code it fails with "copyTree succeeded" (the file lands in esc); with the root it fails closed. Full go test ./... passes on linux (run in a golang:1.27 container — the local Windows box can't create the symlinks these tests need); gofmt and go vet clean.

Exclude js/wasm from the O_NONBLOCK file and define nonblockFlag for it.
nonblock_unix.go is selected for GOOS=js GOARCH=wasm by //go:build !windows. The file references syscall.O_NONBLOCK, which is undefined for that target. GOOS=js GOARCH=wasm go build ./... therefore fails with undefined: syscall.O_NONBLOCK. The base revision has no such file, so this PR introduces the failure. fs.go:113 and fs.go:167 use nonblockFlag, so the js/wasm build also needs a definition.

Landed the js/wasm build fix in 2ee0157: nonblock_unix.go is now guarded by //go:build !windows && !js (it was selected for GOOS=js GOARCH=wasm, where syscall.O_NONBLOCK is undefined), and a new nonblock_js.go provides nonblockFlag = 0 — js/wasm has no FIFO to block on, mirroring the Windows definition. GOOS=js GOARCH=wasm go build ./... now succeeds alongside the windows build; gofmt clean.

Handle FIFOs on Node.js hosts.
A js/wasm program can use the host filesystem through Node.js, where FIFOs can exist. If a listed file or directory is replaced by a FIFO before openRootDir or copyFromRoot opens it, the zero flag permits the open to block before the type check. Context cancellation cannot unblock that open. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Fair point on the Node host — fixed the wrong comment in 3cebfaa. To be precise about what this target can and cannot do: js/wasm certainly can see FIFOs through wasm_exec_node, but it has no O_NONBLOCK to open them with — the flag's value belongs to the host OS, which a wasm binary cannot know. So js/wasm keeps the plain open main has always used, meaning a FIFO swapped in after the walk can still block the open there (no regression from main; unix gets the real protection), and the post-open stat refuses whatever the open finds once it returns. If a fail-closed refusal of suspect paths is preferred for js/wasm, happy to add it.

js/wasm does have FIFOs to block on: a Node host serves real files
through wasm_exec_node. What the target actually lacks is O_NONBLOCK,
whose value belongs to the host OS and cannot be known from the wasm
binary, so the plain open main has always used stays - the swapped-in
FIFO can still block the open there, and the post-open stat refuses it
once the open returns.

The earlier points are all addressed. Two regressions and some comment trimming left:
nonblock_unix.go is tagged !windows && !js, which still selects wasip1, and GOOS=wasip1 GOARCH=wasm go build ./... fails with undefined: syscall.O_NONBLOCK. Main builds there. Tag that file //go:build unix and replace nonblock_js.go and nonblock_windows.go with a single //go:build !unix file that sets nonblockFlag = 0.
CopyTree used to accept a regular file as src (filepath.Walk visits the file itself and it was copied to dst). os.OpenRoot(src) now fails for anything that isn't a directory. Downstream code relies on this: scrutineer's copyAux calls CopyTree on every entry of a skill directory, files included. Lstat src in copyTree and copy a regular file directly, with the same non-blocking open and post-open stat, and add a test.
Subdirectories are now created with Mkdir rather than MkdirAll, so copying into a dst that already holds one of src's subdirectories fails where it used to merge. Keep the refusal, and add a line to the CopyTree doc comment saying dst must not already contain any of src's subdirectories.
The O_NONBLOCK change above removes nonblock_js.go, along with its comment, which refers to "main".
Delete the three-line "Anchor the destination" comment above os.OpenRoot(dst) in copyTree.
In TestCopyTreeRefusesSymlinkPlantedUnderDestinationMidCopy, cut the comment inside the open hook to one line, e.g. // by path, the Mkdir and file create below would land in esc.
…rims
- nonblock_unix.go is now //go:build unix and a single !unix file
(nonblock_other.go) replaces nonblock_js.go + nonblock_windows.go, so
GOOS=wasip1 GOARCH=wasm builds again (O_NONBLOCK is undefined there)
- copyTree lstats src and copies a lone regular file directly, with the
same non-blocking open and post-open stat as file entries, restoring
the single-file sources CopyTree used to accept
- CopyTree doc comment now says dst must not already contain any of
src's subdirectories (subdirs are created with Mkdir, not MkdirAll)
- removed the anchor-destination comment above os.OpenRoot(dst) and cut
the planted-symlink test's hook comment to one line
nonblock_unix.go is now //go:build unix; nonblock_js.go and nonblock_windows.go are replaced by one nonblock_other.go under //go:build !unix with nonblockFlag = 0 (and no comment referring to main). GOOS=wasip1 GOARCH=wasm go build ./... passes locally again.
copyTree lstats src and copies a lone regular file straight to dst with the same non-blocking open and post-open stat the tree copy uses; TestCopyTreeSingleFileSource covers it.
The CopyTree doc comment now states that dst must not already contain any of src's subdirectories; the refusal itself is unchanged.
The anchor-destination comment above os.OpenRoot(dst) is gone, and the hook comment in TestCopyTreeRefusesSymlinkPlantedUnderDestinationMidCopy is cut to one line.
Local go vet/gofmt clean; the only failing tests on this Windows machine fail identically on the unmodified branch (symlink-privilege environment).

The earlier points are all addressed. One regression and some cleanup left:
CopyTree no longer copies a symlink passed as src. On main, filepath.Walk lstats the root and recreates the link at dst. Here the os.Lstat check in copyTree only handles regular files, so a symlink falls through to os.OpenRoot(src), which follows the link and refuses anything that isn't a directory. A symlink to a file fails with "not a directory", a dangling link fails with ENOENT, and a symlink to a directory copies the target's contents instead of recreating the link. scrutineer's copyAux calls CopyTree on each top-level entry of a skill directory, so a symlinked entry there now breaks. Add a branch for srcInfo.Mode()&fs.ModeSymlink != 0 that does os.Readlink and os.Symlink(link, dst), and add a test with a symlink to a file and a dangling link as src.
fs_unix_test.go is tagged //go:build !windows but uses syscall.Mkfifo, so GOOS=wasip1 GOARCH=wasm go vet . fails with undefined: syscall.Mkfifo (js/wasm too). Tag it //go:build unix.
Cut the comment on copyFileTree to one line or delete it; it repeats the one on copyFromRoot.
Cut the comment in nonblock_other.go to one line, e.g. // No O_NONBLOCK here; the post-open stat still refuses non-regular files.
- copyTree's lstat branch now also handles a symlink src: os.Readlink +
os.Symlink recreate the link at dst, matching main's Walk behaviour
(covers to-file, to-dir and dangling sources; a to-dir link no longer
copies the target's contents)
- TestCopyTreeRecreatesSymlinkSource covers the three symlink src kinds
- fs_unix_test.go moves from !windows to unix so syscall.Mkfifo stops
breaking GOOS=wasip1 and GOOS=js go vet
- copyFileTree and nonblock_other.go comments cut to one line
Symlink sources are recreated again: the lstat branch now reads the link with os.Readlink and recreates it at dst with os.Symlink, covering a link to a file, a link to a directory (no longer copies the target's contents) and a dangling link. TestCopyTreeRecreatesSymlinkSource in the unix-tagged file covers all three.
fs_unix_test.go is now tagged //go:build unix, so GOOS=wasip1/js go vet no longer trips on syscall.Mkfifo.
The copyFileTree and nonblock_other.go comments are cut to one line each.

Problem
CopyTreehas four related gaps on a lower-trust source: a file swapped for a symlink between the walk's lstat and the open reads bytes from outside the tree; a FIFO blocksos.Openforever; a device node copies without bound; and src/dst containing one another makes the walk discover its own output (fixes #36).Root cause
filepath.Walklists entries butcopyFilere-opens the raw path, so nothing ties the read to the walked entry, and nothing restricts what counts as a copyable file.Fix
The source is read through
os.OpenRoot(root.FS()walk,root.Open,root.Readlink), so a link that escapes is refused at open time; entries that are not directories, symlinks or regular files are refused;CopyTreetakes actxand checks it per entry; overlap is refused up front in both directions.Testing
New tests: overlap refusal (both directions), a cancelled context stops at the next entry, and a planted FIFO is refused (unix-only, skipped on Windows). The existing symlink test now skips cleanly where creating a symlink needs privileges.
go test ./...failure set is unchanged from the pre-existing Windows baseline; gofmt/go vet clean.Summary by CodeRabbit
