Fixes #90

Summary

Adds forge pr create --fill (-f), which works like gh pr create --fill: it fills the title and body from the commits on the branch, so this is enough to open a PR:

forge pr create --fill

Behaviour

  • Head defaults to the current branch when --fill is set. Without --fill, --title and --head are still required, with the same errors as before.
  • Base defaults to the repository's default branch, looked up with Repos().Get, and is sent explicitly in the create request.
  • One commit: its subject and body become the title and body.
  • Several commits: the title comes from the branch name (- and _ become spaces), and the body lists the commit subjects oldest first. This matches gh's title rule. The list uses plain - subject lines, because --fill doesn't include commit bodies.
  • --title and --body take precedence over the filled values. An explicitly empty --body "" is kept.

Details

  • Which commits count: the delta is <remote>/<base>..<head>, where the remote is the one chosen by --remote, config or origin. The local base branch is often behind, so it's only the fallback when the remote-tracking ref doesn't exist. Nothing is fetched.
  • Merge commits are skipped, as gh does.
  • Qualified heads such as owner:branch read the commits from the local branch.
  • With --push: filling runs first, so a branch with nothing to propose gets an error and isn't pushed.
  • Refs are passed to git fully qualified (refs/heads/...), so a branch name can't be read as an option or match a tag.

Testing

  • internal/cli/pr_test.go runs against real temporary git repositories and a mock forge. It covers single and multiple commits, flag precedence, remote and local base selection, qualified heads, the no-push-on-failure case, and each error path (default branch lookup failure or empty, missing base or head, invalid qualified head, detached HEAD).
  • internal/git/git_test.go covers CommitsBetween (ordering, multi-paragraph bodies, skipped merges, no delta, missing ref) and RefExists.
  • TestPRCreateFillPrefersRemoteBase fails if the remote-tracking lookup is removed.
  • I also ran the built binary against a local fake GitHub Enterprise API and checked the request payloads for one commit, several commits, an explicit --title, and no commits (an error, with no create request sent).
  • gofmt, go vet ./internal/... and go test -race ./internal/git ./internal/cli pass. I didn't run the full matrix or golangci-lint locally.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added --fill (-f) to pr create. It can use the current branch and repository default branch, and derive the pull request title and body from commits.
    • Explicit titles and bodies take precedence over generated content.
    • Updated CLI examples to include forge pr create --fill.

Creating a pull request meant retyping the title and body that are already
in the branch's commits, and naming a head branch that git already knows.
Add a --fill (-f) flag matching gh pr create --fill:

- The head defaults to the current branch and the base to the repository's
default branch, looked up through the forge.
- A branch with one commit uses its subject and body as the title and body.
- A branch with several commits gets a title derived from the branch name
and a body listing the commit subjects, oldest first.
- --title and --body still take precedence, including an explicitly empty
  body.

The delta is computed against <remote>/<base> when that ref exists, because
the local base branch is often stale, and falls back to the local base.
Merge commits are skipped. Filling happens before --push, so a branch with no
commits to propose is reported without being pushed.

Walkthrough

The CLI adds forge pr create --fill. It can use the current branch and repository default branch, then derive a pull request title and body from commits between the selected refs.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 1d5a3

This adds forge pr create --fill, which derives a pull request title and body from branch commits. No concrete merge-blocking issue was found, and explicit title and body values still take precedence over derived ones.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 1d5a3

Automatic filling intentionally publishes local commit messages to the selected repository. Existing push-destination checks remain, and filling errors stop publication. Local and remote branch state can differ, so generated metadata is not guaranteed to describe the eventual remote PR exactly.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The new publication surface is commit-message content sent as title/body to the selected PR repository. Destination selection still uses the existing repository resolver, and Git publication still requires the separate --push option. The inspected GitHub adapter passes these strings as ordinary request fields.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The existing push path still checks supported qualified-head behavior and invokes destination validation before pushing. Parseable push destinations are checked for domain and owner/repository alignment; unparseable destinations retain the pre-existing fallback to Git. Filling does not remove or bypass these checks.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Push and PR creation remain separate operations: creation failure does not undo a successful push. The unchanged GitHub adapter can also report a follow-up failure after creating the PR. These partial-state and retry limitations predate this change; filling adds a validation stage before publication rather than a new rollback mechanism.

Thanks, this works well, and the tests going through the real command against temp repos make it easy to trust. Two changes before merge.

In fillFromCommits, the base ref comes from resolve.RemoteName(), which is the push remote. In the fork flow this PR supports (-R upstream/repo --head me:branch, with origin as the fork), that resolves to the fork's origin/main. When the fork is behind upstream, the generated body lists upstream commits that are already merged. Please use the remote whose URL matches the target repository instead. resolve.PushRemoteRepo already maps a remote name to domain/owner/repo, so this can loop over git remote, pick the first remote matching the target domain/owner/repoName, and fall back to the current remote when none match. Please add a test with a fork remote and an upstream remote where the fork's main is behind.

The doc comment on fillFromCommits can be cut to its last line ("The remote's copy of base is preferred because the local branch is often stale."). The first three lines restate the switch below it.
