Fixes #18

Summary

Adds a public factory package. It imports the providers and returns a ready Client, so a caller can pass any repo URL and get the right forge back. Domains the client hasn't seen are detected and registered on first use.

client := factory.NewClient(forges.WithToken("git.example.com", token))

f, owner, repo, err := client.ForgeForURL(ctx, "https://git.example.com/octocat/hello-world")

Changes

factory package

  • NewClient(opts...) registers github.com, gitlab.com, codeberg.org, bitbucket.org and tangled.org, and enables detection for every other domain. WithToken and WithHTTPClient reach the default forges. A domain registered with WithForge keeps that registration.
  • DefaultForges(token, hc) and Builders() expose the same wiring. internal/resolve now uses them instead of its own copy, and its behaviour doesn't change: it still registers the same forges with the same tokens and HTTP client.

Root package

The root package can't import providers, so first-use detection is opt-in:

  • WithDetection(builders) turns it on. Clients without it behave as before: an unknown domain is an error and nothing is probed.
  • Client.ForgeForURL(ctx, repoURL) returns the forge, owner and repo.
  • FetchRepository, FetchTags, ResolveCommit and ListRepositories use the same lookup, so they detect on first use too. ForgeFor(domain) stays a plain registry lookup, because it has no context to probe with.

Decisions to check

  • Scheme: detection always uses https, whatever the scheme of the URL. A plain-HTTP instance has to be registered explicitly with RegisterDomain(ctx, "http://host", ...).
  • Tokens: the probes themselves don't send the token. It goes to the forge built after detection, which is always https.
  • Untrusted URLs: detection makes requests to whatever host the URL names. The WithDetection docs warn callers who handle untrusted URLs.
  • Failures: failed detection isn't cached, so a transient failure can recover on the next call, and each retry probes again.
  • Concurrency: lookups can now write to the registry, so a mutex guards the forge and token maps. If two goroutines detect the same new domain at once, both probe and build the same https forge, so the last registration winning is harmless.
  • Tokens() behaviour change: it now returns a copy, because returning the live map would race with registration. Nothing in this repo calls it, but outside code that mutated the returned map would no longer affect the client.

Testing

  • factory/factory_test.go covers default forge registration, options reaching the default forges, WithForge precedence, detection against an httptest TLS server (a single probe, the token reaching the API), an http:// URL followed by an https:// one on a host with a token (every request is https and the registration is https), detection failure, and concurrent first use under -race.
  • forges_test.go covers no probing without the option, base URL selection for each URL form, invalid URLs, first-use detection through all four Client methods, and the Tokens() copy.
  • Switching detection back to http or removing the detection fallback makes these tests fail.
  • A throwaway read-only smoke test (not committed) ran FetchRepository through factory.NewClient against github.com, gitea.com, gitlab.gnome.org (detected as GitLab) and an scp-like codeberg.org URL, and all four returned the right repository.
  • gofmt and go vet on the changed packages, go test -race . ./factory ./internal/resolve ./internal/cli, and GOOS=js and GOOS=wasip1 builds of ./factory pass. I didn't run the full matrix or golangci-lint locally.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added automatic detection and registration of supported forges for repository URLs, including self-hosted domains. Plain-HTTP forge instances must be registered explicitly.
    • Added a ready-to-use client with defaults for GitHub, GitLab, Codeberg, Bitbucket Cloud, and Tangled. Existing custom forge registrations are preserved.
    • Repository operations, including commit resolution, can select a forge directly from a repository URL.
  • Documentation
    • Added an example for creating a client with the factory package.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 3402c

This adds a factory package and optional first-use forge detection with no established merge-blocking issue. Plain-HTTP instances still require explicit registration, and caller-provided forges take precedence over the defaults.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 3402c

Automatic discovery expands which destinations a client can contact, so applications accepting untrusted repository URLs must validate destinations. The exposure is limited by explicit opt-in outside the new factory, HTTPS initial requests, and domain-specific tokens. No credential disclosure or newly exposed deployed attack path was established.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · inferred: Detection-enabled clients turn an unregistered repository host into outbound probe requests rather than rejecting it. If an application supplies attacker-controlled URLs without destination controls, this permits requests to destinations reachable from that application, including internal services where transport permits. This is intentional and documented behavior, not an established deployed exploit; existing root-client defaults and resolver callers do not newly enable it.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — For callers enabling discovery, independently supplied hosts and ports can trigger outbound requests using the application’s network position and HTTP-client configuration. Successful detection also creates a reusable in-process registration. Actual tenant, environment, and internal-service exposure depends on the consuming application and was not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The supported conditional attack path is an untrusted repository URL reaching a detection-enabled client and causing a probe before forge identification succeeds. This establishes expanded request reachability, not arbitrary credential theft: the code selects tokens by exact host key, and no deployed untrusted-input entrypoint was established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The discovery option explicitly assigns untrusted-URL validation to callers. Automatic requests begin with HTTPS, while redirects and additional behavior of a caller-supplied HTTP client remain delegated to that client. Probe responses identify software; the initial request occurs before that identification.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Detection requests carry the caller’s context, and detection errors return without creating a forge. This supports retry after cancellation or network failure. Repeated failures are not cached, and simultaneous misses are not coalesced, so request containment also depends on caller cancellation and concurrency limits.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Applications accepting untrusted repository URLs should enforce destination policy at connection time and across redirects, with appropriate timeout and concurrency limits. A reusable policy hook could make that responsibility harder to omit without removing intentional self-hosted forge support.

Explanation

[18] The client lookup and registry changes support first-use detection. The resolver refactoring shares provider wiring. The tests and documentation support the factory. No unrelated change is evident.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[18] factory.NewClient registers the five default domains and enables first-use detection. Tests cover defaults, options, detection, and concurrency. However, forgeOrDetect always probes HTTPS. An unknown HTTP-only forge cannot be detected from its http:// repository URL and requires explicit registration. This does not meet the requested first-use detection for repository URLs.

Resolution

Support first-use detection for HTTP-only forges from explicit HTTP repository URLs. Add automated coverage for detection and registration on an HTTP-only server.

Thanks for this. One thing needs changing before it can go in.

In ForgeForURL, the scheme of the first URL seen for an unregistered host decides how that host is registered, and the token from WithToken goes into that forge. So a single http://git.example.com/a/b registers the host over plain HTTP, and every later call sends the token in cleartext, including calls made from https:// URLs. The main input here is repository URLs from package metadata, which the caller doesn't control, so one stray http:// URL is enough. Because forgeOrDetect goes through RegisterDomain, which always overwrites, a late HTTP detection can also replace an HTTPS registration that another goroutine just made.

Please always detect over https and drop the scheme check in ForgeForURL. Plain-HTTP instances can still be registered explicitly with RegisterDomain(ctx, "http://host", ...). That also makes the concurrent overwrite harmless, since both sides build the same forge. If you'd rather keep HTTP detection, it needs to skip the token for http and only install when no entry exists, so an HTTP registration can't replace an HTTPS one.

Either way, add a test that uses an http:// URL on a host with a configured token before an https:// one, and checks that no token is sent over HTTP and the registration is https.

ParseRepoURL, Client.RegisterDomain and ForgeFor cover URL parsing and
detection, but the default domains and the fallback to detection lived in
internal/resolve, so library consumers had to rebuild them.

Add a public factory package that imports the providers. factory.NewClient
returns a Client that knows github.com, gitlab.com, codeberg.org,
bitbucket.org and tangled.org, and that detects other domains on first use.
factory.DefaultForges and factory.Builders expose the same wiring, and
internal/resolve now uses them rather than keeping its own copy.

The root package cannot import providers, so first-use detection is an
opt-in Client option. WithDetection takes the builders to use, and the new
ForgeForURL returns the forge, owner and repo for a URL. FetchRepository,
FetchTags, ResolveCommit and ListRepositories go through the same lookup.
Clients without the option behave as before and never probe.

A plain http:// URL detects over http so self-hosted instances on plain HTTP
work. Every other form, including scp-like and ssh remotes, uses https.

Detection makes lookups write to the registry, so a mutex now guards the
forge and token maps. Tokens returns a copy, because handing out the live map
would race with registration.

Fixes git-pkgs#18
ForgeForURL used the scheme of the first URL seen for a host, so a single
http:// repository URL registered that host over plain HTTP and sent its
configured token in cleartext on every later call. Detection now always
probes over https, and ListRepositories no longer detects a domain that
carries a scheme. Plain-HTTP instances can still be registered explicitly
with RegisterDomain.

Went with https only in 3402ce5. Detection now always probes over https, the scheme check in ForgeForURL is gone, and TestForgeForURLDetectsHTTPURLOverHTTPS uses an http:// URL before an https:// one on a host with a token and checks every request and the registration are https. I also rebased onto main, which needed Radicle added to factory.Builders().
