Normalize auth, rate limit and server errors across forges - #205
Adds three common errors that errors. Is matches on GitHub, GitLab, Gitea, Bitbucket, Gerrit and Tangled, alongside the existing forge.ErrNotFound:
Error
Matches
forges.ErrUnauthorized
401, 403
forges.ErrRateLimited
429, plus GitHub's 403 rate limit responses
forges.ErrServerError
5xx
Messages don't change, and the original error stays in the chain, so errors. As on *github.ErrorResponse, *gitlab.ErrorResponse or *forges.HTTPError still works.
How each backend gets there
Bitbucket, Gerrit, Tangled: these already return *forges.HTTPError, so a new HTTPError. Is method covers them.
Gitea: the existing wrapErr now classifies by response status.
GitHub, GitLab: each gets a small wrapErr in a new errors.go, applied where an SDK call's error is returned. That's most of the diff: about 200 one-line changes, with no change to control flow. The existing 404 and AcceptedError checks still run first, against the raw error.
GitHub rate limits: go-github reports 403 rate limits as RateLimitError and AbuseRateLimitError, and these map to ErrRateLimited, not ErrUnauthorized. TwoFactorAuthError (a 401) maps to ErrUnauthorized.
forges.ClassifyStatus(status, err) is the new exported helper behind these. It's public so that backends outside this repo can use it too.
Other fixes
I listed every returned error in the GitHub, GitLab and Gitea backends and traced it to the call that produced it. That turned up two paths that would otherwise have been missed:
Bitbucket PullRequests.Diff didn't check the response status, so a 401 or 500 body came back as if it were the diff, with a nil error. It now returns HTTPError.
GitLab Secrets.Set returned the error from its create fallback unwrapped.
Not covered
GitHub CI.GetJobLog fetches the log with a plain http.Get from the redirect URL and doesn't check the status. That request goes to blob storage rather than the forge API. Building an HTTPError there would put the signed URL into error messages, so I left it alone.
Rate limits outside GitHub: only a 429 counts. A 403 from another forge is ErrUnauthorized, as the issue describes.
Testing
errors_test.go in the root package covers the status table, HTTPError. Is, and that messages and wrapped types are kept.
Each backend has its own test against a fake server through the public Forge interface. GitHub, GitLab and Gitea run a range of services, including the helpers that add context with %w.
GitHub cases include primary and secondary rate limits, 2FA, and a non-JSON 502. A 422 stays unclassified.
The GitLab tests build the client with retries off to stay fast. I also ran them once with the default client, which retries 429 and 5xx, and they passed.
Disabling classification in each backend makes these tests fail. So do removing HTTPError. Is, the two GitHub special cases, the Bitbucket status check, or the wrapping of the GitLab secret and user lookup errors.
gofmt, go vet on the root package and backends, go test -race ./..., go test -tags=tinygo ./gitlab, and the GOOS=js and GOOS=wasip1 builds pass. I didn't run the TinyGo compiler jobs or golangci-lint locally.

New Features
API failures are now consistently categorized as unauthorized, rate-limited, server-error, or not-found across supported code hosting services.
Error details and original causes remain available, making it easier to identify failure types while retaining diagnostic context.
Added documentation on recognizing these error categories.
Bug Fixes
Pull-request diff requests now report not-found and other HTTP failures with more consistent error information.
Only forge.ErrNotFound was mapped by every provider, so callers had to know
each SDK's error types to tell an expired token from a rate limit or an outage.
Add forge.ErrUnauthorized (401 and 403), forge.ErrRateLimited (429) and
forge.ErrServerError (5xx), which errors. Is matches on all six backends:
- HTTPError gains an Is method, which covers Bitbucket, Gerrit and Tangled.
- forge.ClassifyStatus attaches a sentinel to an SDK error without changing
its message or hiding its type, so errors. As on the SDK's error still works.
- GitHub and GitLab get a wrapErr helper, applied wherever an SDK call's error
is returned. GitHub's 403 rate limit responses, which go-github reports as
RateLimitError and AbuseRateLimitError, map to ErrRateLimited and not to
ErrUnauthorized.
- Gitea's existing wrapErr now classifies too.
Fix two error paths that would otherwise have been missed. Bitbucket's
PullRequests.Diff never checked the response status, so a 401 or 500 body was
returned as if it were the diff. GitLab's Secrets.Set returned the error from
its create fallback unwrapped.
Fixesgit-pkgs#20
The shared package adds sentinels for unauthorized, rate-limited, and server errors. Provider adapters classify matching API failures while preserving original errors. Tests cover status mappings across providers, and the README documents checking classifications with errors.Is.

Summary
Status sentinels and classification forge.go, errors_test.go
Adds status-based sentinels and ClassifyStatus. HTTPError. Is also matches sentinels by status. Tests check classification and preservation of the original error and its type.
Adds GitHub-specific classification for rate-limit, two-factor, and HTTP response errors. GitHub API methods route non-not-found errors through the helper while retaining existing special cases.
Adds classification for GitLab errors with HTTP responses and applies it across GitLab API methods. Existing not-found and other status handling remains in place.
Other provider integration and documentation gitea/errors.go, gitea/errors_test.go, bitbucket/prs.go, bitbucket/errors_test.go, gerrit/errors_test.go, tangled/errors_test.go, README.md
Gitea uses the shared classifier when a response exists. Bitbucket diff errors include response details. Tests cover status classification for Bitbucket, Gerrit, Gitea, and Tangled. The README describes the error sentinels and errors. Is usage.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 856ab
Large Bitbucket diff error responses can consume excessive memory. The change is mergeable with a bounded follow-up to limit that read.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 856ab
The shared error contract preserves provider error details and existing failure-handling precedence. One failure-containment regression remains: Bitbucket diff error responses bypass the existing response-size limit and could exhaust the calling process if the upstream supplies an oversized body. Ordinary repository-author control over such responses is not established.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: The new Bitbucket Diff failure branch bypasses the existing 10 MiB body limit. A provider-controlled response with status 400 or greater, other than 404, is read without a byte bound and retained in HTTPError.Body. An oversized or continuing error response can therefore exhaust process memory before classification reaches the caller. This newly weakens Diff's dependency-failure containment, although control of the response requires upstream or transport influence rather than merely repository authorship.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The newly unbounded Diff error read can affect the memory and availability of the process performing the request. Whether that process serves multiple tenants or shares other workloads is not established by the supplied deployment evidence.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A controlled or faulty upstream can send an oversized non-404 error body to Diff. The new branch consumes it without the existing byte limit before constructing HTTPError, creating a conditional memory-exhaustion path. No ordinary repository-author mechanism for controlling that upstream response was established.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The Bitbucket endpoint defaults to the fixed HTTPS cloud API, and the constructor accepts a caller-supplied HTTP client or uses http.DefaultClient. Diff propagates context and closes the response body, but neither action imposes a response-byte bound on its new error branch. HTTPError retains the body without including it in the default error message.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Unbounded error-body capture already existed in Bitbucket's JSON request helper. That pre-existing pattern explains the implementation choice but does not preserve Diff's former size-bound guarantee.
