Correct Hex cooldown examples to use HEX_UNSAFE_REGISTRY=1 while retaining origin verification, and replace the ignored default_url setting with mix hex.config mirror_url.

Keep Fedora package signature checks enabled and route both releases and updates through the proxy. Explain how to enable Gradle caching with read-only defaults and opt in to CI uploads, and document Conda's default_channels mapping so requests for defaults also use the proxy. Update the web install page to match the written documentation.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Updated Hex mirror setup instructions and clarified that cooldown filtering may require HEX_UNSAFE_REGISTRY=1; origin verification can remain enabled, and signature verification should otherwise stay enabled.
    • Clarified Gradle local caching and remote uploads, which are disabled by default and require separate configuration.
    • Updated Conda instructions to route defaults through the proxy using default_channels.
    • Revised Fedora RPM instructions to update existing repository URLs while retaining package signature verification.

Walkthrough

README, configuration documentation, and dashboard instructions update setup guidance for Hex, Gradle, Conda, and Fedora RPM. Hex guidance distinguishes origin verification from signature verification. Gradle guidance separates local caching from remote uploads. Conda guidance covers routing defaults requests through the proxy.

Changes: Package setup guidance

Layer / File(s) Summary
Hex mirror and cooldown guidance
README.md, docs/configuration.md, internal/server/dashboard.go
Hex setup uses mix hex.config mirror_url. Cooldown instructions use HEX_UNSAFE_REGISTRY=1 and distinguish origin verification from signature verification.
Gradle and Conda configuration examples
README.md, internal/server/dashboard.go
Gradle instructions describe local caching and optional remote uploads. Conda instructions explain that default_channels routes defaults requests through the proxy.
Fedora RPM repository configuration
README.md, internal/server/dashboard.go
RPM instructions update existing Fedora and updates repository URLs and retain GPG signature settings.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in docs/configuration.md: The Hex cooldown note now specifies HEX_UNSAFE_REGISTRY=1 for filtering, distinguishes origin verification from signature verification, and advises leaving signature verification enabled when cooldown is off. It replaces the instruction to disable registry signature verification via HEX_NO_VERIFY_REPO_ORIGIN=1 or no_verify: true.
  • observed — Modified behavior in README.md: The Hex cooldown note now names HEX_UNSAFE_REGISTRY=1 rather than HEX_NO_VERIFY_REPO_ORIGIN=1.
  • observed — Modified behavior in README.md: Hex setup now uses mix hex.config mirror_url instead of writing a default_url entry to ~/.hex/hex.config.
  • observed — Modified behavior in README.md: Adds Hex cooldown-specific instructions to set HEX_UNSAFE_REGISTRY=1, explaining that filtering releases removes the registry signature, origin verification can remain enabled, and signature verification should stay enabled without cooldown.

Restrict write access to the Gradle cache.

When uploads are enabled, the endpoint does not authenticate PUT requests. isPush controls only the configured client. A malicious entry can affect builds that reuse it.

To upload from CI, set `gradle.build_cache.read_only` to `false` on the proxy and add `isPush = System.getenv("CI") != null` inside the client's `remote<HttpBuildCache>` block. See [docs/configuration.md](docs/configuration.md#gradle-build-cache).

Comment thread docs/configuration.md
Conda cooldown covers `repodata.json`, `current_repodata.json`, `repodata_from_packages.json` and sharded repodata (CEP 16). Other forms of the repodata, such as `repodata.json.zst`, `repodata.json.bz2` and `repodata.jlap` patches, would list versions still in cooldown, so with cooldown on they are answered 404 and conda and mamba fall back to `repodata.json`. With `cache_metadata`, `repodata.json` is read through the metadata cache as it is without cooldown: within `metadata_ttl` the stored copy is filtered as it is read from storage, after it the upstream is asked with its ETag, and while the upstream is down the stale copy is filtered. Once a document has been filtered, the proxy remembers the ETag of the result until the first entry it left out leaves cooldown, so a client revalidating with `If-None-Match` gets `304 Not Modified` without the document being filtered or sent again. The first response for each document has no ETag, as it is sent while it is filtered. Without `cache_metadata`, `repodata.json` is fetched and filtered on every request. Clients cache shards by the hash in the shard index, so with cooldown on the proxy serves a rewritten index whose shard hashes change every hour and filters each shard as it is fetched. Versions leaving cooldown show up within the hour, and clients fetch the shards they need again once an hour. If a channel's shard index points packages or shards somewhere the proxy doesn't route, the proxy answers 404 for it and clients fall back to `repodata.json`.

Note: Hex cooldown requires disabling registry signature verification since the proxy re-encodes the protobuf payload without the original signature. Set `HEX_NO_VERIFY_REPO_ORIGIN=1` or configure your repo with `no_verify: true`.

Looks good. I checked the Hex part against filterPackageReleases: it only drops releases and keeps name and repository, so origin verification passes.

  • RPM: only [fedora] goes through the proxy. [updates] in fedora-updates.repo still uses its metalink, so most package downloads after install skip the proxy. The handler serves updates/ paths, so a second line for that section would cover it: baseurl=http://localhost:8080/rpm/updates/$releasever/Everything/$basearch/.
  • Conda: without default_channels, an environment.yml that lists defaults, or -c defaults, goes to repo.anaconda.com directly. Fine to leave out if that's intended.
