Fix for pre-signed URLs when using different internal/public hostnames.
In my case, I'm hosting git-pkgs/proxy in Upcloud and using their S3-compatible offering. I've got pkgs.example.com, a public s3.example.com host, and a abc123-private.upcloudobjects.com internal S3 host.
Expected results: direct serve returns valid/functional pre-signed URLs for host s3.example.com
Actual results: direct serve returns mismatched pre-signed URLs for host abc123-private.upcloudobjects.com
Fix:
Create a second gocloud.Bucket for the direct serve hostname (if set) and use it exclusively for generating presigned URLs (if direct serve enabled).
Caveats:
Azure/GCS don't use the Host in their (current) signing approaches, so weren't affected by this, and this doesn't touch them.
Testing:
I built & used an image with this and direct serve is now working as expected, with git-pkgs/proxy accessing object storage via the private endpoint and returning redirects to URLs that are pre-signed for the public host and work properly.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Direct-serving links can now use a configured client-facing endpoint while retaining the artifact’s storage path and signature.
Without a configured signing endpoint, direct-serving links continue to use the storage endpoint.
Documentation
Updated the configuration example to show VPC DNS as an internal storage address and a CDN as a client-facing destination. Removed guidance on signed-URL rewriting and reverse-proxy host headers.
When direct serving is enabled and a base URL is configured, the server passes it to storage as a signing endpoint. Storage applies backend-specific signing behavior. Cache-hit redirects use the storage-signed URL directly.
Changes: Direct-serving URL signing

Summary
Add storage signing endpoint support internal/storage/blob.go, internal/storage/blob_test.go, internal/storage/gcs.go, internal/storage/gcs_test.go
OpenBucket accepts an optional signing endpoint. S3 uses a separate signing bucket; other backends rewrite the signed URL's scheme and host. Tests cover S3, Azure, and GCS signing endpoints.
Wire signing into direct serving internal/server/server.go, internal/handler/handler.go, internal/handler/handler_test.go, config.example.yaml
Server setup passes the configured base URL as a signing endpoint when direct serving is enabled. Cache-hit redirects return the storage-signed URL directly. The example configuration and handler tests no longer describe or test proxy-side URL rewriting.

Merge Risk: Low · up to f82ec
This change makes direct-serve redirects use the configured public host. The only open issue is a test that can fail on a machine with an Azure SAS token set in its environment. This is a small fix and does not block merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to f82ec
Endpoint selection remains operator-controlled, and signed access remains limited to the selected object and configured lifetime. The change enables intended public-host downloads without identifying a broader permission grant. Actual public routing and signature acceptance remain deployment-dependent.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The changed flow can make previously invalid alternate-host S3 redirects usable. The issued capability remains a GET for the database-selected cached object and configured lifetime; the inspected construction does not introduce request-selected endpoints or a broader bucket operation.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The signing endpoint comes from deployment configuration, and configuration validation requires a scheme and host. S3 signs against that endpoint without subsequent handler rewriting, preserving the binding between the signed host and the redirect destination.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The startup connectivity check uses the primary storage client. The added signing tests inspect generated hosts, paths, and signature presence without retrieving the object through the public route, so they do not establish deployed public-endpoint correctness.

Clarify backend support for direct_serve_base_url.
The setting currently affects only S3. GCS and Azure users may expect a public URL but receive the backend URL instead.
For S3, document that the public endpoint must reach the same bucket with the configured path style. A reverse proxy must preserve the signed Host header.
