fix(debian): route packages by filename rather than /pool prefix - #672
I added a Debian/apt proxy for https://download.docker.com/linux/debian, but the .deb files weren't being cached properly.
Not all apt repos have /pool so this changes to looking for .deb as cacheable files. Debian source files are always streamed -- I'm honestly not enough of an apt expert here to know if could do better on the caching front there.
In the end I think this is fairly similar to e.g. the RPM handler, and I've been able to proxy official Debian repos + third-party ones like Docker successfully with these changes.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Debian .deb packages are now cached regardless of whether they appear in a pool/ directory or a flat archive layout.
Bug Fixes
Debian source-package files, including descriptors, source archives, build information, and change files, are fetched directly from upstream rather than served from cache.
Documentation
Updated the Debian archive documentation to describe which files are cached and which are fetched directly.
Debian routing now sends .deb files through the package cache based on filename, including files outside pool/. It proxies recognized source-package files directly upstream. Tests and documentation cover the routing and caching behavior.
Changes: Debian artifact routing

Summary
Classify and route Debian artifacts internal/handler/debian.go, internal/handler/debian_test.go, docs/architecture.md, docs/configuration.md
Routes now selects .deb files by suffix and proxies recognized source-package files directly. Tests cover flat-archive .deb caching and repeated upstream requests for .dsc files. Documentation describes the routing and cache behavior.
git-pkgs/proxy#645: Selects previously cached Debian packages for background refresh, which may be affected by the package routing change.

A request for one suite’s package can receive another suite’s cached bytes, while root-level packages are fetched upstream on every request. Correct both paths before merging.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 611fe
Packages from different paths within one archive can now share a cached entry without verification against an expected package digest. If those paths serve different bytes, a request can affect subsequent package downloads by other clients. Repository isolation and existing policy checks limit the scope; an exploitable upstream configuration has not been demonstrated.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: Newly cacheable non-pool package paths inherit a repository-scoped basename identity rather than a full-path or expected-digest identity. Distinct paths with the same parseable package filename therefore share an entry. If a newly eligible upstream path serves different bytes, requesting it can change what subsequent requests to another path receive. Different URLs also use separate fetch-coalescing keys despite sharing persistent identity. The underlying pool-path aliasing is pre-existing; extending it to previously separate paths is introduced here. Attacker influence over alternate upstream bytes remains unverified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The identified aliasing scope is clients sharing one configured archive's package cache, not arbitrary upstream hosts or all named archives. Repository prefixes separate identical filenames across configured named archives; deployment-level network exposure is not established.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A conditional attack path is to request a newly cacheable non-pool URL serving alternate bytes under another package path's basename, thereby priming the shared entry before another client requests that package. This requires request access and an upstream alternate response; neither attacker control over such content nor downstream acceptance is demonstrated. The supported concern is expanded cache-identity exposure, not verified package execution.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Path-safety middleware rejects query-like characters and dot segments before routing. Artifact requests retain denylist checks before cache use or fetching, and enabled scanning runs before cache publication. These controls do not bind a package filename to its upstream directory or expected content digest.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Repeated requests can reuse another path's committed artifact. Concurrent requests to distinct URLs are not coalesced together because URL participates in the fetch key, although both target the same persistent identity. Successful-write and recovery controls therefore do not resolve the content-selection ambiguity.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Bind newly cacheable artifacts to repository and full upstream-path identity, or to an authenticated expected digest. Align concurrent-fetch and persistent identities, and account for legacy entries when changing keys.

For /debian/{repository}/package_1_amd64.deb, parsePoolPath rejects the filename because it has no slash. The handler then proxies it without caching, so repeated requests reach the upstream archive. Parse the filename even when the path has no directory, and add a root-level caching test.

Distinguish flat-layout package paths in the artifact cache.
If two suites in one archive serve different bytes under the same .deb filename, the second request can receive the first suite’s cached package. Include the path in the cache identity for flat-layout packages while preserving existing pool/ cache entries.
