Disable credential helper for submodule sync and update - #38
updateSubmodules ran git submodule sync and git submodule update --init --recursive --depth 1 with only remoteEnv(). That setup keeps the host's credential helper turned on. The top-level clone keeps the helper on deliberately because the caller chose that URL. Submodule URLs are different: they come from the cloned repository's .gitmodules, so an untrusted repository chooses them.
A hostile repository could list any https URL as a submodule. The operator's keychain or gh credential helper would log in to it without asking. The contents of a private repository the operator can read would then land in the untrusted checkout.
Fix
Both submodule commands now run with -c credential.helper=, the same way RemoteBranches and RemoteHead already run ls-remote. Git passes the override down to the clone and fetch it starts for each submodule, so the host's credential helper is never asked to log in to a submodule URL. Callers that need authenticated submodules can still supply credentials through the environment they control.
The comment on the top-level clone now explains why submodules are handled differently. The README notes the new behaviour.
Only the credential helper is disabled. Other ambient credentials still reach a submodule URL: I confirmed with a local probe that an unscoped http.extraHeader and GIT_ASKPASS both still authenticate one (core.askPass works the same way). That predates this PR. The README says so and tells callers that fetch untrusted repositories with RecurseSubmodules to scope those credentials to trusted URLs or remove them. I did not reset http.extraHeader in code, because callers rely on it for authenticated submodules (for example the github.com-scoped header that actions/checkout sets).
Tests
TestEnsureWithOptionsIgnoresSubmoduleFailure now expects the new flag in both submodule commands.
New end-to-end test TestEnsureWithOptionsDoesNotUseCredentialHelperForSubmodules:
It points the submodule URL in .gitmodules at a local TLS server that always answers with 401 and a Basic auth challenge.
It sets up a fake credential helper that records every call to a marker file.
It checks that the server was contacted, the helper was never called and the parent checkout is still usable.
Against the code before this change, the new test fails with credential helper was invoked for submodule URL: "get\nget\n". That confirms the leak was real and the test catches it.
Checked locally: gofmt, go vet, golangci-lint run (root and gogit) and go test -race ./... (root and gogit) all pass.
Not in this PR
The other parts of #35 will come in a follow-up PR:
A limit on recursive submodule fetches (a maximum module count or expanded size).
Optionally allowing submodules only from the parent clone's host.

Behavior Changes
Submodule synchronization and fetching disable Git’s configured credential helper; cloning may still use it. Other ambient Git credentials may authenticate URLs supplied by a repository, so callers fetching untrusted repositories should scope or remove those credentials.
Authenticated submodules can use credentials provided through the environment. Submodule fetch failures remain non-blocking unless the operation is canceled or its deadline expires.
Documentation
Clarified how submodule URLs and credentials are handled.
Submodule sync and update commands now disable Git’s ambient credential helper. Tests verify that recursive fetching reaches an HTTPS endpoint without invoking the configured helper. Documentation describes the credential boundary and other ambient credentials.

Summary
Disable the credential helper for submodule operations ensure.go, ensure_test.go, README.md
Submodule sync and update commands disable Git’s ambient credential helper. The test verifies that the HTTPS endpoint receives a request, the helper is not invoked, and the parent checkout remains present. Documentation notes that other ambient credentials may still authenticate repository-selected URLs.
Harden submodule update: drop credential helper and bound recursion #35: The change disables the ambient credential helper for submodule sync and update, addressing the credential-helper behavior described in the issue. Recursion limits and host restrictions remain separate requirements.
