Add read-only Radicle backend with rad:<RID> repository addressing - #199
Adds a read-only backend for Radicle nodes running radicle-httpd. It follows the plan agreed in the issue and a Radicle repository can now be selected with -R.
What's supported
Area
Radicle API
Notes
Repos().Get
GET /api/v1/repos/:rid
Name, description, default branch, visibility, open issue count and the git-over-HTTP clone URL (https://<node>/<rid>.git)
Repos().ListTags
refs on the repo response
Handles annotated and lightweight tags
Branches().List
canonical refs on the repo response
Falls back to the default branch head on nodes that don't report canonical refs
Files().List
GET .../tree/:sha/*path
Files().Get
GET .../blob/:sha/*path
Binary files are fetched from /raw/:rid/:sha/*path, since the JSON API leaves their content out
Refs (branch names, tag names, HEAD or a full SHA) are resolved to a commit SHA locally from the repo response, because the tree and blob endpoints only accept a commit SHA.
Every write and all other services return ErrNotSupported.
Repository addressing
Radicle repositories have no owner, so the RID is passed as repo with an empty owner.
-R rad:<RID>: the node comes from --host, FORGE_HOST or a single config section with type = radicle.
-R HOST/rad:<RID>: uses HOST. A scheme and port are allowed, for example -R http://127.0.0.1:8080/rad:<RID> for a local radicle-httpd.
The rad: prefix already identifies the forge, so the backend is built directly and no detection runs. Malformed input is rejected: an owner before the ID, a path or userinfo in the host, unsupported schemes, an empty host and a conflicting --forge-type.
There is no default node. Following the privacy point raised in the issue, a missing node is an error that suggests --host seed.radicle.dev rather than silently sending the RID to a public seed. Switching to a seed.radicle.dev fallback is a one-line change if that's preferred.
Empty owner handling
browse now returns browse is not supported for rad:...: the forge has no web interface instead of building https://<host>//rad:....
A small repoDisplayName helper is used in confirm prompts and repo messages, so they show rad:... instead of /rad:....
OwnerForBranch and ParseRepoURL are unchanged. rad:// remotes are left for the follow-up agreed in the issue.
Other wiring
forges.Radicle forge type, a ForgeBuilders.Radicle field and a RegisterDomain case.
Detection probes /api/v1 and matches "service":"radicle-httpd".
--forge-type radicle and type = radicle in the config are supported. Domain("radicle") returns "", the same as Gerrit.
README, --repo, --forge-type and auth --type help text updated.
Not in this PR
Issues and patches. Radicle identifies them by hex object IDs, but Issues().Get and PullRequests().Get take an int. I left both unsupported until we agree on the approach discussed in Add Radicle Forge #88, so Issue and PullRequest are unchanged.
Commits().ResolveCommit.forges.ValidateCommitRef requires a non-empty owner.
rad:// remote detection. This is the agreed follow-up.
Testing
radicle/radicle_test.go: repo mapping, RID validation (including path traversal and escaped input), 404 and HTTP errors, token header, branch sorting, limit and fallback, tags, file listing at the root and in subdirectories, text, binary and space-containing file paths, ref resolution, ParsePath and unsupported services.
forges_test.go: Radicle detection, rejection of a non-Radicle /api/v1 root and RegisterDomain with and without the builder.
internal/resolve/resolve_test.go: every -R form, node selection order, config with one and several nodes, the no-node error and the invalid inputs above.
internal/cli/radicle_test.go: end to end file ls, file cat, repo view and browse through -R HOST/rad:<RID>.
Checked manually against seed.radicle.dev with the heartwood repo: repo view, branch list, file ls, file cat --ref releases/1.0.0 plus the expected errors for browse, issue list and a missing node.
gofmt, go vet, go test -race ./..., go test -tags=tinygo ./gitlab, the js and wasip1 wasm builds and golangci-lint all pass.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added read-only support for Radicle repositories, with automatic forge detection and repository selection by Radicle ID.
View repository details, branches, tags, and files through a selected Radicle node. Choose a node using a host option, environment variable, or configuration; no default node is selected.
Unsupported operations return clear errors, and browsing reports when a repository has no web interface.
Improvements
CLI messages and confirmation prompts display repository names appropriately when no owner is available.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
This pull request adds a read-only Radicle backend for repositories, branches, tags, and files. It adds forge detection and registration, resolves Radicle repository selectors to configured nodes, and updates CLI output for repositories without owners.
Adds the Radicle forge type, API detection and HTTP handling, path parsing, and builder registration. Tests cover detection matches, non-matches, and missing builders.
Repository, branch, and file services radicle/repos.go, radicle/branches.go, radicle/files.go, radicle/unsupported.go, radicle/radicle_test.go
Adds repository metadata and ref resolution, branch and tag listing, and file listing and retrieval. Other forge operations return ErrNotSupported. Tests cover service behavior and errors.
Repository selection and node resolution internal/config/config.go, internal/config/config_test.go, internal/resolve/resolve.go, internal/resolve/resolve_test.go
Resolves Radicle selectors using an explicit host, environment setting, or one user-configured Radicle node. Configuration loading retains user-configured forge types. Tests cover node selection and invalid inputs.
CLI integration and documentation internal/cli/*.go, internal/cli/radicle_test.go, README.md
Documents Radicle selectors and backend coverage. CLI output and prompts format ownerless repository IDs, and browsing reports when no web interface is available. Tests cover file commands, repository output, and browsing.

git-pkgs/forge#88 — The PR adds read-only repository, branch, tag, and file support. It does not add issues, patches, or write operations.
Merge Risk: Low · previous review bfa2b
Radicle host URLs containing paths are silently reduced to the host, so requests can reach the wrong API path. Use a bare node URL; the change is mergeable with this limitation understood.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to bfa2b
The repository and file services avoid sending credentials, but the generic API command bypasses that protection and can send an unrelated fallback token to the selected Radicle node. Exposure requires an API invocation with a token available; its consequences depend on that token’s permissions.
Retained concerns
High · security · observed: The new Radicle selector reaches a generic API path that bypasses the backend’s no-token policy. With FORGE_TOKEN set, an invocation such as forge --host node.example -R rad:RID api repos/{repo} independently resolves that fallback token and sends it as a bearer credential to node.example. The receiving node needs no privileges on the token’s originating forge to capture it. Although the API command’s authentication behavior predates this PR, ordinary Radicle selection newly reaches it; the base rejected the bare rad:RID selector.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The credential exposure is limited initially to the token selected for an affected API invocation, not every stored credential. A receiving node could reuse a valid fallback token against its originating service; independently reachable accounts, repositories and operations depend on that token’s actual scope, which is not supplied.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
observed — The credential path is Radicle repository selection, API base URL discovery, independent TokenForDomain lookup, bearer-header construction and HTTP transmission. No redirect or metadata manipulation is required. The no-token tests exercise backend repository and file services, not this generic API path, so they do not contradict the source-level disclosure path.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The selected node supplies repository identity, refs and file content. A nonempty response RID is accepted and reused for subsequent requests. The inspected read path does not independently authenticate that identity or content, so node selection represents a content-trust decision rather than cryptographic verification.
observed — The shared HTTP client retains its pre-existing default redirect behavior. The Radicle redirect test covers a 302 without Location and verifies an HTTPError, not a same-origin redirect policy. This inherited behavior is not treated as a separately introduced vulnerability.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Represent outbound credential policy explicitly and apply it to both backend services and generic API requests. Radicle traffic should not automatically inherit fallback credentials merely because it exposes an API base URL.

Thanks! Both findings are fixed in the latest commit. I've left the docstring coverage warning as it is: the repo doesn't enforce it and the trivial service methods follow the existing tangled backend's style.

Token over HTTP: the Radicle backend no longer sends Authorization at all (latest commit on this PR). Every endpoint it uses is public and read-only, and the token passed in was often the generic FORGE_TOKEN fallback for another forge, so dropping it removes the risk for both HTTP nodes and redirects. -R rad:... also skips the token lookup entirely now.
HTTPS to HTTP redirects:HTTPClient() is shared by every backend, so I fixed that separately in Refuse HTTPS to HTTP redirects in the shared HTTP client #200. It refuses any HTTPS to HTTP redirect, keeps the 10-redirect limit and adds a test showing that net/http would otherwise resend Authorization in cleartext on a same-host downgrade.

Reject paths in node hosts used by bare rad:<RID>.
The HOST/rad:<RID> path rejects /, ?, #, and @, but --host node.example/path and FORGE_HOST=node.example/path bypass that check. splitScheme keeps the unschemed value unchanged, and the Radicle backend then sends API requests under https://node.example/path/api/v1. The no-default-node behaviour is fine. I'd rather users hit a clear error than have RIDs go to a seed they didn't choose, so keep it as is.
Two things to change.
getJSON and getRaw in radicle/radicle.go read the whole response with no limit. The node can be any seed the user points at, and file cat on a binary file reads the whole of /raw/... into memory. Wrap the body in io.LimitReader with a cap and return an error when it's exceeded, the way readLimited does in tangled/tangled.go, and add a test with an oversized response.
Some comments restate the code or the README. Please cut them:
detect.go:92: delete // Try the radicle-httpd API root.
radicleRepoFromFlag in internal/resolve/resolve.go: cut the doc comment to one line about there being no default node.
splitRadicleRepo: keep only the sentence about hasHost.
The New doc comment in radicle/radicle.go: one line saying the token is ignored because every endpoint is public is enough.
getJSON and getRaw now read through a readLimited like tangled's and return an error over 32 MiB. The cap is higher than tangled's 1 MiB because blob JSON and /raw/... carry whole file contents. Added tests for an oversized JSON response, an oversized raw response and the exact boundary.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Thanks, the response cap and the comment trims both look good.
The new commit adds a few comments that restate the code. Please cut them:
maxResponseBytes in radicle/radicle.go: one line is enough, e.g. "Sized for whole file contents, since the node can be any seed the user points at." Drop "It is a variable so tests can lower it."
readLimited in radicle/radicle.go: delete the doc comment.
setMaxResponseBytes in radicle/radicle_test.go: delete the doc comment.
